Former Celtic Academy Captain Completes Return to Football After 2 Years Out
After being forced into an early retirement owing to injury, Sam
Wardrop, a former Celtic defender who started his career with the Glasgow
giants and captained the Under-20s to a Scottish Youth Cup final victory in 2017,
has triumphantly returned to professional football.
In August 2017, Wardrop made his professional football debut after going on loan to Dumbarton in the Scottish Championship. In May 2018, he inked a two-year deal with Dundee United. He returned to Dunbarton and then Airdrie before, regrettably, injuries ended his career and forced him to retire from the game 786 days ago.
Wardrop started a 365-day challenge to play professional football abroad of the UK in an effort to rekindle his career. He has successfully secured a short-term contract with Ljungskile SK, a team playing in the Swedish third division, barely 120 days into his challenge.Wardrop started a 365-day challenge to play professional football abroad of the UK in an effort to rekindle his career. He has successfully secured a short-term contract with Ljungskile SK, a team playing in the Swedish third division, barely 120 days into his challenge.
This action is a critical turning point in Wardrop’s comeback to the NFL,
demonstrating his tenacity and commitment to overcoming the obstacles
that previously threatened to end his career too soon.
