Recalling his first Davis Cup match, Novak Djokovic

In an attempt to win his nation’s second Davis Cup, Novak Djokovic is leading Serbia in the Malaga Davis Cup Finals. Novak remembered his first Davis Cup match nearly twenty years ago. At sixteen, he made his national debut in April 2004.

In the Serbia & Montenegro vs. Latvia Davis Cup Group II match, a teenager had a chance. In his debut ATP match, Djokovic defeated world no. 1340 Janis Skroderis 6-2, 6-2 in a match that was a dead rubber.

With each set, the young Serb controlled the pace and went over the top in style, delivering multiple breaks. Djokovic has triumphed in the last 21 Davis Cup singles matches; his most recent defeat came against Juan Martin del Potro in the 2011 Davis Cup.

Since then, Novak has triumphed and is aiming for this year’s second Davis Cup trophy. After advancing through the round-robin phase in Valencia, Serbia is now one of eight nations competing in Malaga for the championship. Serbia defeated Great Britain twice in the singles matches to advance to the semifinals.

Djokovic defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and forty-one minutes to record his 44th victory in the Davis Cup. Despite dropping eight points in his games, Novak served well, applying pressure to Cameron. In order to move up to world no. 1, the British player saved ten break points but lost one set of serves.

In 2004, Novak Djokovic participated in his first Davis Cup match.
In the fifth game of the opener, Djokovic set up two break opportunities and won the second one with a winning volley. Before Djokovic sealed the set with a volley winner in game ten, which ended in a 6-4 victory after 47 minutes, Norrie had saved four break points in the seventh game, pulling himself within one break deficit.

At the start of the second set, Norrie made a forehand error that caused him to be broken and veer further away from the desired outcome. In the fifth game, Novak squandered five break opportunities, missing a chance to take the lead further while serving well and finishing with an ace at 5-4.

“I recall that we had a game in Belgrade. Situated in the second zone of the Euro/African Group,

I mean, more than a century old. For any tennis nation, this is the match that matters the most to win. We’re hoping to have a shot at winning it this year,” Novak Djokovic stated.
