Official news: Chicago bears has received positive response from…

Eric Washington joins the Bears as defensive coordinator.

January 27: On Saturday, Eric Washington was appointed defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears.
The 54-year-old Washington will take up the coordinator duties that were previously under head coach Matt Eberflus, who took over after Alan Williams left in September for personal reasons. Before taking the helm as head coach of the Bears, Eberflus served as the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 21.

“We are excited to announce that Eric Washington will be joining our team as the defensive coordinator,” Eberflus stated. He will improve our present defensive staff because he is an excellent communicator and leader. With experience as both a coordinator and a defensive line specialist, his record speaks for itself. I would also like to express my gratitude to the other excellent applicants for this post.”

Washington has been the Bills’ defensive line coach for the previous four seasons. In 2023, he served as Buffalo’s assistant head coach as well.
Washington, who played for the Bears for three seasons (2008–10), is making a comeback to Chicago. Before taking on the role of defensive line coach, he spent the first two seasons as a defensive assistant. After that, he worked as the defensive line coach for the Carolina Panthers for his first seven seasons (2011–17) before moving to the position of defensive coordinator for the final two seasons (2018–19).

“My family and I are beyond excited to be returning to the Chicago Bears,” Washington stated. “It is humbling to have the opportunity to contribute to one of the most esteemed sports organizations in the world.”
The Bears were tied for the league lead with 22 interceptions this season and gave up an NFL-high 86.4 rushing yards per game. They did, however, allow 22.3 points per game (ranked 20th in the league) and 237.8 passing yards per game (ranked 25th).
