California’s Santa Clara (AP) — In exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick, the San Francisco 49ers acquired edge rusher Chase Young from the Washington Commanders, providing much-needed reinforcement to their beleaguered defense.
Young was on his way to San Francisco, according to two individuals with knowledge of the agreement, awaiting a physical after the trade that was finalized prior to Tuesday’s deadline. Because the teams hadn’t made the announcement, the individuals spoke to The Associated Press under condition of anonymity.

The rumored trade was made the day after the Seattle Seahawks made headlines when they acquired defensive lineman Leonard Williams, a former Pro Bowler, in exchange for two draft picks from the New York Giants. With their victory over Cleveland on Sunday, the 5-2 Seahawks pulled even with the 5-3 49ers for the top spot in the NFC West, setting up a mini-arms race for this week. The two division rivals will play one game this Thanksgiving in Seattle on November 23 and another game at San Francisco just over two weeks later on December 10.

Young and Nick Bosa, his old Ohio State colleague, will combine to offer the Niners (5-3) a potent edge rush tandem and a much-needed.
