RESULTS What Ronnie O’Sullivan said about the Sports Personality of the Year Awards in the past as snooker great is nominated in 2022.

Though he has previously been critical of the awards, Ronnie O’Sullivan is a nominee for Sport’s Personality of the Year.

After winning his seventh global title in May, The Rocket was nominated this year. However, he has previously stated that the award is a popularity contest, with winners determined by the sport they play.


Football player Beth Mead, England Test cricket captain Ben Stokes, gymnast Jessica Gadirova, athlete Jake Wightman, and curling player Eve Muirhead are among the nominees for O’Sullivan.

O’Sullivan had previously disagreed with it because he believed snooker was too small to warrant an award nomination, much less a winner.

In 2016, he remarked, “You’re competing with the Olympics, tennis, golf, and Formula One.” “They allot about ten seconds.”

A year later, he declared, “I’m so happy I don’t get nominated because I would never want to go.” “Sitting around at a gathering is not my kind of thing. I sincerely hope I never receive a nomination since it’s not my scene.

“I’m never going to get that one. I’m not sure why. I doubt I’ll be participating in the hunt. Not in my opinion. I have no desire to win. Trophies, honors, or accolades don’t concern me.”

The only other snooker player to win the trophy is Steve Davis, and that was back in 1998.

O’Sullivan didn’t place in the top three and didn’t receive his first nomination until 2020.

“I am unaware of any other British athlete who has achieved the level of success that I have,” he said in October to Seventh Heaven, a segment on Eurosport. “I can’t quite think of one, but there probably is one.

“I think that connects with people, breaking the major record with 21 majors and matching Stephen Hendry’s seven world titles. I have had a great deal of support from the British public over my lengthy career.
