Aston Villa news: O’Rourke fears points deduction despite ‘huge’ development

Qualifying for the Champions League won’t stop Aston Villa from losing points

or maybe violating PSR. Senior journalist Pete O’Rourke acknowledged on the most

recent episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that Villa’s finances

would benefit greatly from the £40 million boost for making it to the group

stages, but that the impact would be limited by additional expenses.

Fourth in the standings and with a strong chance of qualifying for the Champions League, Unai Emery’s team is barely breaking even after revealing a £119.6 million loss in their end-of-year financial statements this month.

In order to help balance the books and prevent a points deduction, they might also be compelled to sell players this

summer. According to Football Insider, Jacob Ramsey may be moved due to

concerns about a PSR violation, which was revealed on March 22.

Aston Villa face financial struggles despite “huge” £40m boost

O’Rourke claimed that Champions League qualification could see key stars’ wages increase and cause clubs to boost price tags for the Villans’ summer transfer targets.

“They will have to balance the books [regardless of Champions League qualification],” he told the Inside Track podcast.

“Obviously, Villa would benefit greatly from receiving £40 million to enter the Champions League. Conversely, players’ salaries increase if they are in the Champions League.
“Players who you want to sign – their price tags go up too because clubs know you’re in the Champions League.
“It’s a difficult balance to get that right and that’s what Villa need to do right now.
Despite the owners’ great wealth and ambition, it is not sustainable to record losses of less than £120 million annually. “If they keep seeing those kinds of financial results, they’re going to have a PSR breach.” Aston Villa FFP: Keith Wyness renders a decision regarding the club’s violation of financial regulations following a recent development.
